In the first quarter of 2026, Kit Carson Nursing & Rehabilitation Center was rated 1 out of 5 overall, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) reported. This rating trails behind the California nursing home average of 3.2.

The facility offered 199 beds, exceeding the California average by 100 beds for the same period. An average of 71.8 residents received care at the nursing center during this time.

During the first quarter of 2026, Kit Carson Nursing & Rehabilitation Center paid 1 fine totaling $9,110 and incurred one penalty.

Estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau show the nation’s older adult population continues to rise as younger groups decline. Between 2020 and 2024, the number of Americans ages 65 and older grew by 13%, while the population below age 18 decreased by 1.7%. The nation’s senior population has seen a dramatic increase over the last hundred years, going from 4.9 million in 1920 to more than 61 million by 2024.

A study published in 2021 indicates nearly half of these older adults—about 28 million people—may need long-term services and support. The findings also project that over a third may ultimately require care in nursing homes.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an insurance education organization. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
